A Note To All Parents
We as coaches love the game of soccer. We have both played organized soccer since we were very young and have chosen to coach as a way of giving back to the game we love.
We are sort of "old school" type coaches -- we work the boys hard at practices & games. If they're doing something right, they will hear it from us first. If they're doing something wrong, we're not afraid to tell them either. As parents, we tend to "baby" our own kids at home sometimes, so we think it's good to have a coach that tells them the honest truth about their performance -- good and bad. And that's because we care and we want to make them better soccer players. When you're doing a poor job and nobody points it out to you, that's because they've given up on you. We make sure to have lots of dialogue with the players -- both encouraging and admonishing -- so that they learn from their mistakes. Just benching or yelling at a player without an explanation makes no sense at all -- he won't learn anything from that.
We would like to encourage parents, family & friends to come out and support the boys at our games. They need you there and it means the world to them to see you at the park cheering them on. But in terms of giving them instruction during the game, we ask that you please leave that to the coaches. We can't have a parent instructing them one way and the coach telling them something different.
If your boy cannot make a practice or a game, instead of calling one of us we ask that both coaches are notified by email (ian_welch@ymail.com and RLPeters77@shaw.ca) at least 24-48 hours prior. This way, if one of us is unavailable, the other coach will receive your message. If we do not hear from you and your boy does not show, we may sit him out for all or part of the next game or have him run laps at the next practice. It is not fair to us as coaches or to the rest of the boys if you have not given us advance warning and consequently the other boys have to play twice as hard because we don't have enough subs. We hope you understand (NOTE: emergencies are, of course, the exception).
Lastly, please do not expect an email or phone call from the coaches before a game or practice to remind you. It is up to you to consult the schedule on our web site. We will definately send an email if the schedule has been changed or if a game has been cancelled (or we will phone if less than 24 hours notice). But if you don't hear from us, the game is on with the date / time / location that is on the schedule.
P.S. -- Surrey United has written a great manual about what expectations they have of parents that should be read by everyone -- it can be found here.
Thanks everyone. We're looking forward to a great year together.
